The Hidden Risk of Direct Steam Peer-to-Peer Connections

Steam is the world premier PC gaming platform, but legacy peer-to-peer (P2P) communication protocols historically presented a significant security vulnerability: initiating a direct Steam voice call or P2P multiplayer session could reveal your public IP address to anyone on the other end of the line.

Packet analyzers like Wireshark could easily capture raw UDP audio streams and extract the exact residential IP address of the caller or receiver, leaving players vulnerable to doxing and denial-of-service disruptions.

How Steam Datagram Relay (SDR) Eliminates P2P Leaks

To combat this vulnerability, Valve integrated a specialized networking privacy layer directly into the Steam client. Instead of opening a direct connection between your router and another player PC, Steam can route all P2P network traffic through Valve global relay proxies.

When this setting is active, the remote party only sees the IP address of Valve edge data center, keeping your home network completely invisible.

Step-by-Step: How to Enable Full P2P Protection in Steam

  1. Launch the Steam Client on your desktop.
  2. Click Steam in the top-left menu bar and select Settings.
  3. Navigate to the In-Game tab on the left sidebar.
  4. Locate the dropdown menu labeled Steam Networking.
  5. Change the value to Always (Relay my connection through Steam servers).
