The Honeypot Strategy: In-Game Hallucinations
In Call of Duty: Warzone, Activision introduced one of the most creative in-game anti-cheat mitigations: Hallucinations (Ghost Spawns). Instead of banning a suspected cheater instantly, the server places them into a live psychological trap.
How Server-Side Hallucinations Operate
- Cloning Legitimate Player Telemetry: The game server generates a synthetic player entity that clones the real-time movement, skin, and weapon loadout of an authentic opponent nearby.
- Invisible to Honest Players: To legitimate players with clean game clients, the decoy is completely invisible and inaudible.
- Hyper-Visible to ESP & Wallhacks: Because the decoy entity exists in server network packets, cheat overlays (ESP/Wallhacks) render the decoy as a high-threat opponent standing behind a wall.
- Aimbot Honeypot Lock: When the cheater aimbot snaps onto the decoy and fires, the server records definitive mathematical evidence of unauthorized memory reading and aim-locking.
Zero False Positive Confirmation
Because legitimate human players cannot see or target the hallucination, any player who tracks or fires at the decoy entity provides 100% indisputable behavioral proof of cheating.
