The HWID Ban: Why Changing Your IP Won't Unban You in Valorant (Vanguard)

The Evolution of the Ban-Hammer

Ten years ago, punishing a toxic player or a hacker was notoriously difficult. If a game administrator banned an account, the user would simply create a new free account (smurfing). If the admin banned their public IP address, the user would just reboot their router or turn on a VPN to bypass the restriction.

To finally stop the epidemic of repeat offenders, companies like Riot Games (Vanguard), Epic Games (Easy Anti-Cheat), and Activision (Ricochet) escalated to the nuclear option: The Hardware ID (HWID) Ban.

What is a Hardware ID (HWID)?

Modern anti-cheat systems operate at the "Kernel Level", meaning they load before Windows even fully boots up and have supreme, unrestricted access to the deepest physical architecture of your computer.

When you install Valorant, Vanguard algorithmically scans your physical hardware components. It looks at the serial numbers burned into the silicon at the factory. It records:

  • The serial number of your Motherboard.
  • The MAC Address of your Network Interface Card (NIC).
  • The serial identifiers of your RAM sticks.
  • The unique UUIDs of your SSDs and Hard Drives.

It hashes all these numbers together to create a singular, unique digital signature for your exact physical machine (The HWID).

The Death Sentence

When an HWID ban is issued, the game's servers permanently blacklist that physical signature. It does not matter if you move to a new country. It does not matter if you use the most expensive proxy network. The second that specific motherboard attempts to communicate with the game server, regardless of the IP address, the server identifies the poisoned hardware and issues an instant, automated ban on any account trying to log in.

Can You Bypass an HWID Ban?

You cannot use networking tricks to escape an HWID ban. The only methods are highly complex or expensive:

  1. Buying a New PC: The only 100% guaranteed way to circumvent an HWID ban is to physically replace the motherboard, network card, and storage drives. You essentially have to buy a new gaming rig.
  2. HWID Spoofers: A massive black market exists for "Spoofers," which are illegal kernel drivers that attempt to intercept the anti-cheat's hardware scan and feed it fake, randomized serial numbers. However, Vanguard frequently detects spoofers, resulting in the user losing the money they paid for the hack.
  3. MAC Address Spoofing: If the ban is very weak and only based on the Network Card, software can sometimes spoof the physical MAC Address, though modern anti-cheats rarely rely on this single metric anymore.

Before buying a used gaming PC on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, always keep in mind that the prior owner might be selling a machine that is permanently HWID banned from popular competitive titles.
