The Hollywood Myth: The Instant Street Address Lookup

In crime TV dramas and action movies, a hacker types an IP address into a terminal and instantly zooms into a satellite view of a specific house with a flashing red crosshair. In the real world of networking, it is technically impossible for a regular person or website to find your exact street address or apartment number from an IP address alone.

What Public IP Geolocation Databases Actually Reveal

Commercial GeoIP databases (such as MaxMind GeoIP2, IPinfo, and DB-IP) map IP addresses based on public BGP routing announcements and ISP registration registries (ARIN, RIPE, APNIC). When a website queries your IP, it discovers:

  • Country & State / Province: 99%+ accuracy.
  • City or Metropolitan Area: 70% to 85% accuracy (resolving to your regional ISP routing center or POP).
  • Internet Service Provider (ISP) & Autonomous System Number (ASN): 100% accuracy.
  • Postal / ZIP Code: Approximate regional centroid (often miles away from your actual home).

Who CAN Link an IP Address to Your Street Address?

Only one entity on Earth maintains the record connecting your dynamic IP address to your physical street name: Your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Under strict privacy laws (including GDPR in Europe, CCPA in California, and LGPD in Brazil), ISPs can only disclose customer billing records and subscriber physical addresses in response to a formal Court Subpoena or Law Enforcement Search Warrant in criminal investigations.

How Cybercriminals Actually "Dox" Real Addresses

If an IP address only reveals city-level data, how do online predators and doxers find street addresses? They use Pivoting & Data Correlation:

  1. They extract your city and ISP from an IP grabber link.
  2. They cross-reference your username with old database breaches containing full names and phone numbers. Read our report on how IP addresses appear in dark web breach databases.
  3. They search public voter records or real estate registries in that specific city to pinpoint the target.
